Max races his go cart at Hibbing Raceway on June 26, 2010

Each year Hibbing Raceway has a kids go cart race at intermission during one race. Well, that race was last night. We asked Max if he wanted to race his go cart earlier in the week, he said yes, then he said no, then he said yes. He also asked if we would be getting him a racecar truck and a racecar trailer to haul his go cart to the races. Darrin told him the minivan would be fine.  Max then asked us if we were going to get him a pit crew in case he "popped a tire or something out there."  I told him that daddy would be his pit crew.

We needed to be sure that Max could handle racing on a track, because he's so used to just cruising around the yard.  So, we turned our driveway into a racetrack. More posts and videos to come on the practice. Grandpa Ralph and Uncle Steve came over to watch Max practice a few times.  I'm not sure what they enjoyed more...watching Max or Darrin.

Darrin and Max (when he could pay attention) worked on the go cart and Darrin took one of our spare car seats and modified it to become a safety seat in Max's cart.  Max liked it and it was much more comfortable for him.

The night of the big race
As you can see from the video Max had an interesting first lap of the race.  He was too busy checking out the people in the stands and missed the of the green flag, so he decided he was going to catch up with the rest of the kids by cutting the corner and turning in front of them.

After that, he did pretty good and didn't want to stop after the checkered flag was thrown.  I don't know that we could say he won, but he was the first to the checkered flag.

It was a fun night and I'm not sure how long the smiles will remain on Max's grandpa's faces.  I think auntie Tricia had fun too; it was her first time going to the races.
